This guide covers how to reach Oarai from Ueno, the Kamiiso torii, the shrine, the coast, the aquarium and the local seafood.

Many people visit the Kamiiso torii, which stands on a reef where rough waves strike. The sections below run from the rail line to the water's edge, through the shrine and along the shore, and end at the aquarium and the table.

In town, the Magari-matsu shopping street takes as its symbol a black pine bent greatly by the sea breeze. Long-established shops, including inns, sake breweries and marine product processors, line the street. Getting to the town takes a rail ride from Tokyo and a short connection at the other end.

From Tokyo, take the JR Joban Line limited express from Ueno to Mito. At Mito, change to the Kashima Rinkai Railway Oarai-Kashima Line, which runs to Oarai Station. The Umimachi Line circular bus runs from Oarai Station to Aqua World Oarai. The shrine can be reached on foot from the same station.

The Kamiiso Torii at Sunrise

The morning sun lights the torii while rough Pacific waves break white against the reef. Around the winter solstice, a photograph can capture the torii and the morning sun together. On windy days, sea spray can reach visitors at the torii.

The torii stands on the coastal rocks and is a symbol of Oarai Town as well as of the shrine. Every New Year's Day, the chief priest and priests go down to the shore and worship the New Year sunrise. The rocky shore around the torii is called Kamiiso, and people may not set foot there. The torii cannot be seen without going down to the seashore.

The Zuijin gate carries fine carvings of rabbits, other animals and plants. The openwork carvings are carved from the wood itself rather than assembled from parts. Bizen-ware komainu stand in front of the gate.

The worship hall and thatched main hall are surrounded by the guardian forest. The stone wall around the main hall has a fine mesh pattern worked into its stonework, made by stonemasons of the early Edo period.

  • Three frogs sit close together in front of the worship hall.
  • The worship hall's transom has 14 carvings, of which 10 can be seen from outside.
  • The main hall, worship hall and Zuijin gate were completed in Kyoho 15 (1730).

The Oarai Coast and Its Beach

Rough waves strike the large and small reefs along the coast and wash over the rock. Shore crabs on the rocky shore are timid and quickly hide. The beach here is a natural sandy beach where marine organisms live. Sand collected on the southern shore because of the effect of the Oarai Port breakwater, forming a wide beach.

Monkfish and Seafood in Oarai

Monkfish dobujiru is made by stir-frying the monkfish liver in a pot, adding chunks of monkfish and vegetables, and simmering them in miso with the juices the ingredients release, without using water. It began as a dish that fishermen ate on their boats to keep warm.

Monkfish kyosu is a local Oarai dish of blanched monkfish flesh and liver eaten with a sauce of the liver blended with vinegared miso. Because monkfish have a slimy surface and are hard to cut on a chopping board, they are customarily cut while hanging.
